At approximately 6,300-7,000 Angstroms in the visible light spectrum, the color red signifies warmth, vitality, passion and energy. It also symbolizes fire, masculinity, even war-like qualities. As an attention-getting color, red is used to communicate danger – think STOP signs -- or alert us to emergencies such as fire. The color of lifeblood, red also communicates qualities of sexuality and control. We say that we “see red” when we feel so strongly about something that we are blinded by rage. We may wear red to an important meeting, to project power and authority. On Valentine’s Day, we give each other red hearts and flowers, calling on red's association with passion and warmth. Red is the color that corresponds energetically with our first or base chakra. Chakras are energy centers that permeate our physical bodies; seven major chakras interpenetrate the body at various levels within the torso and head. As the color of the base chakra or energy center in our bodies, red represents the material side of life.
