The working
theories for NLP are the
NLP
Presuppositions
and although we
don’t claim that they are 100% true, it turns
out that if you act AS-IF they are true,
wonderful results can be achieved. In fact,
highly successful people are the most likely to
use this way of thinking naturally in their
everyday life. It works.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming
is a name created by the originators of NLP,
Richard Bandler and John Grinder. (One was a
mathematician and one was a linguist, hence the
complex-sounding name.)
NLP has been called a user’s
manual for the human brain.
NLP is a way of
understanding human behavior
that can
facilitate powerful
change.
It works to help you overcome life problems and
generate positive desired changes in a
very simple and
powerful way in a
very short
time.
Early NLP work focused
on how
the most respected
therapists in their fields helped clients to
make powerful changes in their lives. Their
methods varied widely so it was not
possible to cook-book how they worked. The
genius of NLP is that it looked at the
structure
of what they
were doing, rather than the content, to
discover the underlying key ingredients that
sparked creative transformations.
NLP has changed and
evolved in the 30+ years since its inception.
There are many ways to use this technology of
mind, from helping to train salespeople to be
more persuasive, to working with a client to
discover his or her life mission and spiritual
purpose.
NLP is a great adjunct therapy
for overcoming fears, phobias, even allergies
(which NLP defines as phobias of the immune
system!).
Here are a few of the
NLP Presuppositions. These are statements that
NLP does not declare to be "true", but it does
propose that if you act "as-if" they are true,
your life is highly likely to change for the
better! Try them on and see how they
feel.
The map is not the
territory. People make maps of their
world. When we react to something, we are
reacting to our inner maps, not to the world
itself. Making adjustments to your inner map
makes adjustments to your experience of
reality.
There is no such thing as
failure, only
feedback.
Especially when you are new to something,
failure is an important part of the learning
process. In NLP, “Everything worth doing is
worth doing poorly at
first.”
When what you are doing
isn’t working, do something
else. …Anything else. Many of us get
stuck doing the same thing over and over even
when it doesn’t get our desired results. NLP
has techniques to help you expand your
behavioral choices. Speaking of
which...
Choice is better than no
choice. Choice allows flexibility and
the ability to see things from multiple points
of view. Flexibility gives you a tremendous
advantage. It allows you to control the quality
of your own and others’ experience!
